Higher Education Partnership Forum Between Turkey and the United Kingdom Held in London

British Council and Higher Education Board (YÖK) held a one-day event in London to find avenues for collaboration and develop new connections.

Deputy President of Higher Education Board Prof. Dr. Rahmi Er: “The internationalization of the Turkish higher education has great importance for us. Through cooperation agreements with other countries, we want to make Turkish higher education a center of attraction in regional and global scales,” said in his speech, during the program. 

He added: “Britain is a significant destination for education and the council wants to contribute to the internationalization goal of Turkish higher education by bringing together British universities and Turkish universities.” 

“Turkey’s Istanbul University - Cerrahpasa’s Rector Prof.Dr. Nuri AYDIN gave a talk during the Forum. He focused on double diploma programmes and student and academic staff exchange between universities. Prof.Dr. Aydin said “Istanbul University Cerrahpasa is the top medical faculty in Turkey. Every year the best students from Turkey choose the leading faculty Cerrahpaşa Medical School. Also, the name of the Florence Nightingale being preserved as a faculty name within the body of the university will reinforce the ground for further partnerships.”

The New Perspectives: UK–Turkey higher education strategic partnerships forum saw the attendance of the top 13 research universities in Turkey. The Head of English and Higher Education for the British Council in Turkey, Aysen Guven, said: “The attendance of 13 rectors from leading Turkish universities and representatives of 50 universities from the U.K. signifies the importance of the event.”

“Today is a starting point,” she told to Anadolu Agency, “[It] aims to increase the cooperation in higher education between the two countries” and to increase the mobility of students and researchers between universities.
Turkey’s Ambassador to London Umit Yalcin and UK’s Ambassador to Ankara Sir Dominick Chilcott also attended the event held in central London.
